ChEdML is a new XML format invented in order to encode information about concepts used in chemical education. The name ChEdML stands for Chemical Education Markup Language.

By using ChEdML, it will be possible to develop learning management systems that support student responses with chemical content. Generally, question and test items that contain chemistry concepts are delivered to students in multiple choice formats. ChEdML will soon make this a thing of the past. Coupled with powerful user interface and response analysis software, ChEdML will allow instructors to deliver computer based questions and exercised that will require students to input chemistry responses. These will include chemical symbolism such as isotopes, reactions, electron configurations, thermochemical reactions, Lewis structures, molecular orbital diagrams and many more. The web is a great way to teach chemistry because it allows teachers to show materials that are not possible to show in a textbook - animations, three dimensional models, simulated reaction kinetics etc. What web-based systems lack, however, is a way to test student understanding of chemistry concepts by asking them to provide responses using real chemical symbolism, rather than just numbers or multiple choice questions. ChEdML will fill that void.

ChEdML is not a standard yet. Fundamentally, ChEdML is a research project brought about by the need to provide a way to encode General Chemistry information in a format suitable for efficient computer processing, yet easy to read and understand by humans. ChEdML is currently under development, with new elements and attributes being added, removed or changed quite frequently. There is no DTD or XML schema yet, but a few examples are available to show the ideas that we want to represent. How likely it is for ChEdML to develop into a standard depends on how useful the chemical education community will find it.
